A suggested letter to send is:

Dear Stephen

It has come to my attention that that the Australian Government is considering recognising the Former Yugolsav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) simply as “The Republic of Macedonia”.

I write to you in support of the continuing use of the name FYROM by the Australian Government. In using this name the Australian Government will be seen to:

a) Support and not undermine the United Nations in finding a fair and equitable solution to the name issue regarding FYROM. As you are aware negotiations are still being conducted between the United Nations, Greece, and FYROM.

b) Be fair and equitable, and not unduly support one side over the other regarding this issue. “FYROM” was agreed to by the United Nations, Greece, and FYROM as a name to be used until a mutually acceptable solution is found. Using the term “Republic of Macedonia” is favouring FYROM at the expense of Greece.

c) Treat both domestic communities fairly and equally, as they each have an interest in this issue. Again, using simply “Republic of Macedonia” is favouring one side over the other domestically.

d) Not support intransigence on the side of FYROM, which has continuously not acted in the spirit of United Nations negotiations but sought to bypass them. In this regard I note that the Greek side on the other hand has approached the issue in a conciliatory manner and has even suggested the use of a composite name, a move supported by the United Nations mediator.
