Greece grab late winner
16 Nov 2005
Greece beat Hungary 2-1 at home thanks to a late strike by Kafes to regain some of their self-respect after they failed to qualify for the World Cup in Germany.
The home-side opened the scoring through Bolton's star Giannakopopulos in the 31st minute with a strike from close range but Hungary, who mainly had a defensive game, equalized in the 77th minute. Hainal was tripped down into the penalty area and Kensei converted from the spot.
Keeper Kotsolis, replacing Nikopolidis, missed out on the chance to make a dream debut in the national squad as he almost saved the penalty - but Kensei's shot was just too powerful.
However, the Greeks had the last say as Kafes three minutes before the end of the match made it 2-1.
Greece played well throughout the match and deserved this result having as a negative only five minutes in the first half (from 35th to 40th) and a weak start in the second.
After the end of the match, EURO 2004 MVP and Greece's captain Theodoros Zagorakis stated that he will always be next to the national team.
"National team is my life. Of course is another person this who is making the call ups but I still aim to help Greece." He said, mentioning: "We have to be soldiers. Our target is nothing else but the qualification in EURO 2008."

Zagorakis will be 37 yrs old at Euro 2008 & 39 at 2010 World Cup. Giannakopoulos, Vryzas, Tsartas, Kapsis, Fyssas, Lakis & Nikopolidis will all be between 38 & 36 in 2010. Greece have lots of good young player playing in the top leagues in Europe. Defenders we have Tavlaridis (Lille, France), Kyriakos (Rangers, Scotland), Seitaridis (Dynamo Moscow, Russia), Darlas & Vyntra (PAO). Forwards we have Charisteas (Ajax, Holland), Anamatidis (Eintract Frankfurt, Germany), Samaras (Herenveen, Holland), Matzios & Papadopoulos (PAO). Midfielders there are Kafes (Olympiakos), Katsouranis (AEK). Nikopoulidis & Giannakopoulos are good enough to play until the age of 37 in 2010 with Dellas, Basinas & Karagounis in their early to mid 30's at the time.
