JIMMYJUMP
The Root of All Evil is a television documentary, written and presented by Richard Dawkins, in which he argues that the world would be better off without religion. The documentary was first broadcast in January 2006, in the form of two 45 minute episodes (excluding advertisement breaks), on Channel 4 in the UK. Dawkins has said that the title "The Root of All Evil?" was not his preferred choice, but that Channel 4 had insisted on it to create controversy.[1] His sole concession from the producers on the title was the addition of the question mark. Dawkins has stated that the notion of anything being the root of all evil is ridiculous.[2] Dawkins' book The God Delusion, released in September 2006, goes on to examine the topics raised in the documentary in greater detail.

Part 1: The God Delusion
The God Delusion explores the unproven beliefs that are treated as factual by many religions and the extremes to which some followers have taken them. Dawkins opens the programme by describing the "would-be murderers . . . who want to kill you and me, and themselves, because they're motivated by what they think is the highest ideal." Dawkins argues that "the process of non-thinking called faith" is not a way of understanding the world, but instead stands in fundamental opposition to modern science and the scientific method, and is divisive and dangerous.

Part 2: The Virus of Faith
In The Virus of Faith, Dawkins opines that the moral framework of religions is warped, and argues against the religious indoctrination of children. The title of this episode comes from The Selfish Gene, in which Dawkins discussed the concept of memes.

I like this guy, he presents logical arguments.

Unless the "faithful" are complete morons they should know that the sun doesn't rise and that God isn't responsible either way. However, blind faith restricts the mind, creates prejudice and poisons society. And this from a believer!
I know Nate and many others on this forum hold the opposite point of view. And even though us religious types outnumber you guys by billions, on a logical level, your arguments outnumber ours probably by billions.
Religion was born out of fear and uncertainty. It provided its earliest adherents with hope and "explanations". I guess the question that I and others like me have to ask is: do we still need religion? For now I still do but I will definitely be investigating it further. Comment on this as I know you will but don't ask me why? I can't really answer other than I just do.
nate
I am not an atheist. I believe in God, I don't believe in churches though nor the Bible.. entirely.
I do agree blind faith restricts thinking, if you already have an 'answer' why would you research it further?
The only respect I have for the Orthodox Church is for leading the rebellion against the Turks and bringing back our Hellenic identity despite how much its pagan roots must of hurt them.
As I have seen here in my city, the Orthodox Church are just money grabbing entrepreneurs like KFC or Toyota. The Greek Church is divided in two here and each one tells there members to boycott the other as they are heathens, they practice the exact same principals but it's all about $$$$ to them.

Churches have always been and always will be institutions that use the excuse of God to justify and push the agendas of those in charge. Another reason why I have little respect for priests.
Even the Bible points this out, no man is without fault nor perfect. So why do we allow imperfection to run this thing that is suppose to be the house of God?

Religions die over time because they loose relevance, we're living in an age of information - I wouldn't be surprised in the next 150 years if organised religion as we know it is extinct.

My feelings on the Church are not that different than yours. I guess that's why I don't really attend and even though I like our priest I haven't had communion for over 30 years!
Religion is remarkably resilient. Logic would dictate that your prediction will come true but Nate, when has religion ever been logical?
nate
What I meant by Organised religion as we know it vanishing is that the established churches will go. I should of been clearer on this.
People will still be illogical and turn to the next thing.. i.e. look at Scientology and Jehova Witnesses. Two of the biggest growing churches in the western world.

Agreed. The meteoric rise of Scientology (a quasi-religion started by a science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard) should be the clearest indicator that when organized religions go belly-up there will be others ready to step in. In North America people already look to figures like Oprah Winfrey and Tony Robbins as new messiahs. Is God's plan for man to follow a talk-show host or motivational speaker (who both happen to be billionaires)? Remember, the cults of yesterday are the mainstream religions of today.
