I am quite new to windows, started with a Mac then only ever used 98 when it came out, then went back to MAC OS 9. Then got a XP box, hated it (it crashed bad and wiped out all my work, so I smashed it, fixed it, sold it), went back to MAC OS at the roll out of 10.2. So I only really have like 3 years of Windows under my belt.
I am still using OS 10.4 on my PowerMac (best Comp ever!) and will never switch again, in the next decade at least. I think vista is skata, but anywaaay.
I just got a laptop with XP for uni and I'm curious what other things people run to keep windows running at its best;
I have Ad-Aware, Norton Anti-Virus/firewall/spyware, Windows Defender and that's it.

Apparently a lot of windows boobs are from a corrupt registry... so is this programme worth getting, and do people use it ?

I run Registry Mechanic, Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware Pro & VET anti-virus. Also, use MSConfig to get rid of stupid, useless startup functions. Go to Run and type in msconfig and click OK. In the services and startup tabs, turn anything off that you dont want EXCEPT leave anything that runs out of system32 ON. It'll make it much quicker and leave you with more RAM to play with as windows and programs in general are memory whores and like to slow you down with their crappy background processes

Sorry but I HIGHLY recommend NOT downloading either of those. You've already got a clean version of Windows, don't fuck with it. Do what I told you and if your laptop is reasonable you will be flying. That adds so much unnecessary shit and although it gets some leaks fixed, it opens up holes as well. With the right software you'll be sweet and i'll say it again, DON'T go down that path if your XP is already legit

Niko, trust me on this one. Its fucking great.
I have a Celeron 1.7 with 512kb of ram, and runs faster than most pc's that Ive used. Ask Woggy, Blaze and a few others who haved used my pc.
Worst case scenario, he has a legit copy of Xp, he can try this one, if he doesnt like it, then he can re install his original version.

JJ are you sure that the version of XP you have will run on a laptop? Laptops are annoying with their drivers etc.

I can't find a cracked version of registry mechanic, grrrr.... Will keep looking.
I already have a cracked 2003 office.
Since I got to use this laptop at Uni on their network, I don't really want to mess around with this SP3... but I got an old Pentium3 box sitting somewhere collecting dust. One day when I'm bored I'll try running it on that, see how it goes.
Also, NAV is quite the chunky hoe, I turned it off and the computer loaded like 15 seconds faster. What's a better alternative, preferably with a little background thing like NAV to monitor incoming files. ?
