my computer freezes whenever i attempt to shutdown correctly, and therefore I have to continually turn it off via the power button. Then when I turn it back on the next day it shows an expected msg (i.e. you didnt shut down properly yada yada) and then it keeps going and then persists in turning off, and i repeat this tedious process for a few minutes and then it finally works.
so guys what is the problem??

I dont have any protection on mine at all and since removing everything ie Norton trend and adawares etc my comp runs smoothly. All those programs are made to make problems.

Do an online scan of your PC if you have no AV software, I remember Symantec did one as well as Mcafee. Just do a google search and pick one. For spyware grab something good and free like Spybot Search and Destory...good luck

My old video does that too...it still works but for some reason it gives that message. If your PC still boots, don't worry bout it, it's fine. If it doesn't and you don't do any hardcore gaming, just a standard $80-90 card will do you fine...even a $50 one will be ok. Check out msy.com.au. They have branches in Sydney too.

I put this on to a computer forum
My monitor fails to load Windows XP, the monitor switches 'off' and
displays the message 'no input signal'. Originally I thought it was
either the monitor itself or the video card. I purchased a new monitor
thinking that might have been the original problem, but the monitor
came up with the same message of no input signal. i then thought there
may have been a faulty or damaged (integrated) video card installed on
the computer. I had a friend open the computer and install a spare and
compatible video card and it worked perfectly. the 60GB memory that i
had inside and found that it had some damage on it. So he put a 16GB
memory (with Windows 98) in the place of the 60Gb, and it worked
beautifully. So we summised that it is the memory that was the problem,
so i bought a new memory 80GB for my computer and it was installed. I
then took the computer and attempted to install windows but after about
half an hour the monitor had switched off.

Try to change the power supply. What sort of video card do you have? I know of some that (I can't remember which type...early AGP cards methinx...) draw quite a bit of load and that could be screwing with things. Before you go spend some money (although a power supply will cost ya 10-15 bux) grab your mate's supply from his machine and try it out on yours. If you don't wanna spend money, take the supply out, let it sit for a good while, then unscrew the cover and give it a good clean.
How did you find that your 60 gig drive was damaged by the way? A damaged drive will only generally restart a PC....twice I've seen drives that will stop power from coming on.
