Manly in 20-18 NRL win over Sharks
Saturday, March 25, 2006 - 9:07 PM

Manly has overcome a slow start to break its home ground hoodoo and take out the inaugural Steve Rogers Memorial Trophy match 20-18 against NRL rivals Cronulla at Brookvale Oval.

The Sharks dominated early, sprinting to a 10-0 lead, but were again overrun in the second half with the Sea Eagles claiming their first win of the season, and just their second victory from eight starts at home.

Skipper Ben Kennedy led from the front as Manly, backed by a crowd of 13,114, laid the groundwork for the rebuilding of Fortress Brookvale.

Manly mauls Bulldogs clap2.gif clap2.gif

anly has overcome a case of second half jitters to beat an inept Bulldogs outfit 40-14 at Telstra Stadium.

The Sea Eagles led 28-6 at the break and extended their lead soon after with a penalty goal before going to sleep for 20 minutes.

The hosts raced in two tries in that period to reduce the gap to 16 points with a quarter of an hour remaining.

But a soft try to man-of-the match Ben Kennedy in the 67th minute put pay to the comeback and Steve Bell sealed the issue with his eighth try of the year shortly after.

"It's very satisfying to come here against a quality side and collect the two points," Manly coach Des Hasler said.

"It's an important win for us."

The Sea Eagles' fourth win from five starts came on the back of a terrific first half performance.

The visitors crossed for five tries inside the first 40 minutes to set-up a match-winning 28-6 advantage at the break.

The rot set in for the Bulldogs after just two minutes when Travis Burns flopped a ball out the backdoor for Matt Orford to pick and up cross under the posts.

Orford grabbed his double six minutes later when he pounced on the ball after Bulldogs winger Matt Utai lost it attempting to get out of the in-goal.

At 12-0 the signs looked ominous but Willie Tonga gave Dogs supporters some heart when he flashed over wide out following a movement involving six players.

Hazem El Masri banged over the sideline conversion and the margin was just six.

But the rest of the half belonged to the Sea Eagles, who pulled away with two tries to Paul Stephenson and another to Steve Matai.

In a mistake-riddled second half, Canterbury scored the first two tries but just couldn't hold onto the ball long enough to make any impression on Manly.

The workaholic Kennedy, just days after announcing he would be retiring, was again outstanding for the Sea Eagles.

Manly 40
Tries: Stephenson 2, Orford 2, Matai, Kennedy, Bell
Conversions: Orford 5
Penalties: Orford

Canterbury 14
Tries: Tonga, Utai, Williams
Conversions: El Masri

RD24-Manly belts Souths, holds 3rd spot

Manly maintained its grip on outright third position on the NRL ladder with a 38-16 win over South Sydney at Brookvale Oval on Sunday.

Led by stand in captain Matt Orford, the Sea Eagles overcame a 12-10 halftime deficit to run out seven tries to three winners in front of a crowd of 19,253.

Fullback Brett Stewart extended his try-scoring feast at home, bagging a hat trick to take his record to 30 four-pointers from his last 28 games at Brookvale.

Centre Steve Matai grabbed two tries of his own, both coming from Orford kicks in the space of four minutes midway through the second half to seal the victory for the home side.

Orford, standing in for injured skipper Ben Kennedy, was in everything and should have scored a try himself except for an unselfish pass to reserve hooker Shayne Dunley in the 33rd minute gifted his teammate his first try of the season.

Orford had side stepped his way through the Rabbitohs defence and past fullback Todd Polglase without getting touched but then, with just a few metres to the white line, he gave the ball to Dunley for the easiest of four-pointers.

Stewart could have finished with four tries but he fumbled a tricky bouncing ball from an Orford kick after another line break in the eighth minute as Polglase applied a timely tackle.

The Eagles fullback was everywhere, feeding off Orford's sublime positional play but his final try was all his own work.

Stewart collected a Joe Williams grubber kick and then ran 65 metres untouched to the tryline.

It capped a tremendous second half revival by the Eagles, while the Rabbitohs will be disappointed to have let such a positive start crumble into a heavy loss.

Paul Mellor (15th minute) and Joe Galuvao (54th minute) both barged over for tries while winger Nathan Merritt (19th minute) scored his 21st try of the season to keep his lead at the top of the try scorers' list.

RD25-Late goal seals Manly's win
Friday, August 25, 2006

Manly halfback Matt Orford has kept alive his side's top-four hopes with a match-winning field goal in the dying minutes to seal a thrilling 21-20 NRL victory over the Bulldogs at Brookvale Oval.

With the scores level and just two minutes and 10 seconds left on the clock, Orford kicked the 30-metre match winner to seal the result.

Orford's night seemed over when he hobbled from the field after sustaining a 43rd minute knee injury attempting a tackle on Bulldogs superstar Sonny Bill Williams.

But the courageous No.7, who was the dominant player before the injury, returned midway through the second half and made the match-winning play.

It's the second time this season Orford has snapped the winning field goal after also landing the knockout blow against Parramatta at the SCG.

The Bulldogs were fuming a crucial decision went against them in the 64th minute when captain Andrew Ryan was denied a line-ball try.

After watching numerous video replays, video referee Graeme West ruled against the Bulldogs, claiming Ryan lost the ball over the line.

Earlier, a capacity crowd of 20,163 had barely found their seats when Orford scored the opening try, just 75 seconds after the opening whistle.

The Manly halfback was on the spot when a Michael Monaghan kick downfield found open space and provided the home side a fortuitous bounce.

Orford was also instrumental in the Sea Eagles' second try just six minutes later, his pinpoint cross-field kick finding the chest of unmarked winger Michael Robertson.

The home side let in two soft tries to squander the early advantage, with Bulldogs forwards Nate Myles and Andrew Ryan crossing to level the scores at 12-all.

But just two minutes before the break, Manly reclaimed the advantage through interchange hooker Shayne Dunley, who crossed for a contentious try.

Bulldogs fullback Luke Patten may have tackled Dunley just short of the line, but video referee Graeme West ruled in favour of the home side.

The Sea Eagles suffered a double blow shortly after the resumption, with Orford sustaining a knee injury while attempting to tackle Sonny Bill Williams. While the No.7 was receiving attention from the trainer, Bulldogs centre Andrew Emilio crossed for a try, with El Masri's conversion levelling the scores at 18-all.

With 16 minutes remaining, Ryan looked to have broken the deadlock when he wriggled out of a Steve Bell tackle to score but the try was disallowed.

Both sides exchanged penalty goals late in the match to level the scores with eight minutes remaining.

In a further blow to the Bulldogs, back rower Brad Morrin tore his calf muscle (partial dislocation of the knee cap) late in the first half and took no further part in the match.

Manly bag 32-6 NRL victory over Raiders
Saturday, March 17, 2007 - 9:19 PM

Two tries to star recruit Jamie Lyon helped Manly to a 32-6 NRL trouncing of Canberra in greasy conditions at Brookvale Oval tonight.

The Sea Eagles scored six tries to one to outclass the wooden-spoon favourites, whose second half error count meant they were never in the hunt.

Winger Michael Robertson, lock Luke Williamson, centre Steve Bell and prop Jason King also grabbed four-pointers for the home side, who lit up Brookvale despite the ground's eastern side floodlights twice failing during the second half.

Canberra's only try came from fullback Marshall Chalk four minutes after the break.

The much vaunted new Manly halves combination of Lyon and captain Matt Orford had little time together with the former Parramatta star moved back to his old position of centre from the 12th minute when Steve Matai limped from the field.

The pair had managed to come up with their first misunderstanding in spectacular style when the five-eighth dropped a pass cold from his skipper's penalty tap in the seventh minute.

But they clicked for Lyon's first try when Orford sent a pinpoint grubber into the in-goal in the 32nd minute for his centre to pounce.

The former St Helens pivot's second also came from a kick, replacement half Travis Burns sending up a high cross-field bomb which Raiders winger Colin Best fumbled to allow Lyon to touch down.

The first light failure came moments after Chalk's try and caused a delay of around five minutes.

The second came 10 minutes into the second half, as video referee Phil Cooley was deciding to disallow a try to Manly forward George Rose, but play went on before several of the lights came back on.

Cooley had been in the thick of the action, also disallowing a Todd Carney try in the 26th minute when he failed to ground the ball from his own kick.

Chalk's try was referred upstairs after the ball had ricocheted off several players from a Carney kick before the fullback managed to get a hand on it.

Robertson's opener in the 14th minute, the result of another Best fumble, was also awarded by Cooley when he scrambled to ground an Orford kick.

Canberra replacement Neville Costigan was placed on report for lifting Sea Eagles hooker Michael Monaghan.

Manly records 13-10 win over Warriors first.gif

Manly's undefeated start to the 2007 NRL season has continued, with the Sea Eagles coming from behind to beat New Zealand Warriors 13-10 at Brookvale Oval.

Led by resilient fullback Brett Stewart, who scored one try and had two disallowed, the Sea Eagles overcame a 6-0 half-time deficit to beat the Warriors at home for the first time since 1996.

Stewart was the star for Manly with his constant menacing runs proving a headache for the tiring Warriors defence despite picking up a corked thigh in the first half.

After his two first-half efforts were denied by officials, Stewart put the Sea Eagles ahead for the first time in the 59th minute after Michael Monaghan's scheming run gave him space to dummy through the line and cross untouched.

Stewart's quick pass just four minutes earlier after more lead-up work by Monaghan allowed Chris Hicks to score in the corner, with Jamie Lyon's sideline conversion levelling the scores at 6-all.

Monaghan sealed the deal for Manly with a 30m field goal in the 72nd minute.

The Warriors rallied but a 78th minute try to back-rower Simon Mannering proved too little too late as the visitors had just 50 seconds to find another try to steal the game.

For a while, however, it looked as though the Warriors staunch defence and luck from referee Ben Cummins and video referee Phil Cooley would deny Manly.

Stewart's 11th minute try was ruled no try because of a double movement and his 28th minute crossing called back for obstruction.

Skipper Brent Kite was also denied when he was stripped over the line by Wade McKinnon and Cooley awarded a Manly penalty, but no penalty try.

Stewart also came within inches of touching down five minutes shy of half-time after he tried a blindside run on the last only to be dragged short of scoring.

Wing Michael Robertson was also denied in the 42nd minute when he was ruled to have pushed Michael Crockett out of the play before scoring off a Monaghan bomb.

Former Eagle Michael Witt set up the Warriors first try when his cross-field bomb in the 14th minute was allowed to bounce straight into the hands of centre Tony Martin, who dotted down in the corner and then converted for a 6-0 lead.

Warriors wing Crockett left the field in the 67th minute with a left wrist injury.

Eagles bag 16-14 win over Bulldogs clap2.gif

Manly have continued their remarkable undefeated start to the NRL season by coming from behind to defeat a brutal Bulldogs outfit 16-14 at Telstra Stadium.

In a punishing encounter highlighted by some heavy hits in defence, the Sea Eagles emerged triumphant with a three tries to two victory in front of 20,269 fans to remain at the top of the ladder after five rounds.

With the Dogs' kennel of world-class forwards dishing out some bone-crunching tackles, it took a clever piece of individual brilliance from halfback Michael Monaghan to deliver Manly victory.

Trailing 14-10 with 10 minutes remaining, Monaghan ran to the line and chipped over the top, regathering the ball on the full then offloading to centre Steve Bell who scored less than 10m in from touch.

Ice-cool centre Jamie Lyon calmly slotted the conversion to give the Eagles the lead and surely cement his selection in the Kangaroos Test team to be named on Sunday after a superb performance.

The Bulldogs had appeared on track to end the Eagles' perfect start to 2007 when they led 6-4 at halftime and Sonny Bill Williams emerged from the break to rattle Manly.

First he lined up Brent Kite with a massive shoulder charge, then next tackle knocked the ball out of Anthony Watmough's hands.

Seconds later he ran onto a Mark O'Meley short ball to sprint 20m and score.

But Manly hit in the 49th minute when Dogs winger Hazem El Masri fumbled an awkwardly bouncing grubber from Monaghan straight into winger Chris Hicks' hands and he scored the simplest of tries, Lyon's conversion reducing the deficit to 12-10.

Despite a woeful first-half performance littered with handling errors from both sides, the Dogs assumed the lead just five minutes from the break after an inspired piece of play by replacement Dallas McIlwain.

McIlwain tackled Manly backrower Anthony Watmough 10m out from the Sea Eagles line forcing a handling error.

He then grabbed the ball from dummy half and charged straight for the tryline, dragging Watmough all the way with him to score.

Earlier, the Sea Eagles had grabbed the lead when winger Michael Robertson crossed in the corner after just 12 minutes.

Monaghan drifted across the park and then looped a long cut out pass to Robertson who was free on his left wing and able to sprint about 10m and dive into the corner.

DOGS BARK AT "FORTRESS" BROOKIE

Bulldogs bag 27-8 victory over Manly
Source: AAP

The Bulldogs bounced back from a week of turmoil and a shocking start to crush high-flying Manly 27-8 in tonight's NRL match at Brookvale Oval.

Down 6-0 following a try to Anthony Watmough after just three minutes, the Bulldogs stormed back with four unanswered tries to end Manly's ten-game unbeaten run at 'Fortress Brookie'.

Former Test centre Willie Tonga scored a first half double with Corey Hughes and backrower Nick Kouparitsas the other tryscorers.

The only downer for the Bulldogs was front row enforcer Mark O'Meley being put on report, the NSW Origin hopeful catching winger Michael Robertson around the head with a swinging arm in the 19th minute.

The Bulldogs were always going to be fired up after being in the news for the wrong reasons during a week when Sonny Bill Williams and Ben Roberts were both in hot water over off-field incidents.

But an early penalty against O'Meley allowed Watmough to scythe through before the Bulldogs capitalised on some poor ball control by the Se Eagles in their own half.

Willie Mason was held up over the line but Corey Hughes punctuated a brilliant display as he darted over from dummy half with a soft effort on the very next play.

The home side went up by two courtesy of a Jamie Lyon penalty following O'Meley's indiscretion but the Sea Eagles five-eighth turned villain moments later when he coughed up the ball.

Willie Tonga went over on the ensuing set when the Manly defence rushed up and he had his second when another turnover - this time from Watmough - saw Daryl Millard do brilliantly to pass as he fell to the ground for his centre partner to score.

Neither side was able to gain an immediate advantage after the break but, on the back of an increasingly anxious home crowd, the Sea Eagles lifted.

Their momentum was boosted by three successive penalties against the Bulldogs, the visitors lucky to keep their full complement as Orford appealed for someone to be sin-binned.

Steve Bell was twice stopped just short of the line, as was Adam Cuthbertson, Menzies blowing their best chance when he missed unmarked winger Michael Robertson with a pass that floated over the sideline.

Tempers flared as Orford retaliated to a late tackle from Kane Cleal by throwing a punch at the Bulldogs forward, but again the Sea Eagles failed to turn possession and position into points.

Eventually the home side was put out of its misery when Kouparitsas scored ten minutes from time, the rangy backrower backing up following a nice interchange of passes between Tonga, Williams and Andrew Ryan.
