generally you can try a few, but i think spyware is more of a google-and-diagnose-how-to-remove thing
generally if you know your way around your operating system you can remove *most* spyware and ud know if its running, i.e. know your registry and you should be fine... now you might ask wtf is a registry?? well registry is your operating systems database where all your startup/settings/program information is ussually held, if you know how to control it you can control/modify your operating system as you need it to, mind you the registry is massive, so you can always google on how to do things to your registry. You might have seen files with extension .REG which is batch registry files for adds/amendments . they are somehow dangerous if you dont know what you're doing.
generally if you notice something weird happening with your pc, there several antispyware programs to deal with them.
example theres things that some of these programs will pick up that the other might not

SPYBOT
ADWARE
MS antispyware

if things dont really get picked up then google your problem (process)

oh theres also HijackThis! which shows you your Internet explorer's startup settings, but you shouldnt be really doing anything with that unless you know what you're doing..... hijack this is a really nice tool if you have a browser "hijacker" , basically thats spyware which "hijacks" your browser , i.e. you try to type in a site and it constantly takes you to another

My hardrive...well one of them, i dont know which one is making really annoying screaching sounds...but only when i run limewire...and then my computer crashes and i have to reboot. i dont know why all of a sudden its been doing this, cos its been working fine for like 3 years with no probs then a few weeks ago it stuffed up. i uninstalled it ages for a few weeks but its still doesnt work. i have no idea what it is cos iv tried whatever i know. but still nothing....anyone help?

knowing Symantec antivirus its a very average product

Symantec buy technology based companies and are great about marketing products

On software antivirus try using CA anti virus it has two engines the Vet engine and also CA Innoculan engine but the way these guys work Symantec CA (Computer Associates) etc is that they have labs searching for virus's all the time. You need to have automatic updates switched on. but software antivirus's only do so much

if you really want to be prepared u need to buy a firewall and not the cheap shit Dlink firewalls. You need a firewall that does deep packet inspection . This means that when packets come in it does not only make sure that its addressed to you it searches inside the packet (information) and looks for mallisicous code.

If you recieve spam email it usually coms with an atachement which is harmful to your PC. A good firewall with deep packet inspection does not only detect but also strips the attachement which means your computer is always safe

Watchguard does not do this neither does Symantec or Juniper

Cisco does but they do not have a low end model for home users. The only one that does is Sonicwall tz 170 and 150 series. may be a litle bit expensive but is worth it

im pretty sure my dads router has a firewall built into it. n we need to use proxy to have the firewall work...but i take proxy off cos i dun want dad knowin wat i go on i guess that could explain all the crap on my pc

Furthermore to DJ nicks comments, you have to able to setup the firewall, and if you have no idea.. then dont bother, just let your pc get infected and format it every so often. otherwise you have to watch what you open/download --- example any email that comes through with the word "free" or "sex" or "oil" should go straight into deleted items

then again your best bet to not getting infected with a virus or adware is by not connecting on the internet!!! so all off you log off now!!!!

Sounds like your drive may have some bad sectors and either limewire or the folder where you store your downloaded files touches on those sectors. You can either do a defrag and it will rearrange the data away from the damaged sectors or get yourself a new drive to have your OS on, leaving the damaged one for data storage.

hey monts how are ya? go through bios if u dont no how to get into bios, restart ur comp once your computer loads press delete and then enable the floppy disc aka FDD through bios

i have a problem too.
i installed mozila not to long ago, and its been working really well n i loveit. but last week it istalled some update thinggo, and now its been really weird, like up the top where the navigation bar is, i customise it so i that it can have the new tab n copy paste n other buttons i want but everytime i restart it, it all goes away and i have to set it all again. and all my bookmarks got lost too. n i had some really important ones for school. any way to get them back? and make it remember the customised settings? maybe i just need to re-install it or something. i dunno, its being a bitch.

Monty, make sure you have the driver installed for it.

JJ i installed the drivers (with the disk that came with the motherboard) and made sure that all was enabled in teh BIOS Settings at the start up.

Trelo that is a bug at the moment. It only happens on internet explorer. We are aware of it and are addressing the problem.

umm kitty dont worry i been waiting for ages and i still havent got a reply.

Um maybe u should try formatting it and starting fresh, install windows all over again.

um... i know F.A about windows, i only ever used it at school and uni so... just work with me.

open firefox, go bookmarks > manage bookmarks.
You should see your bookmarks under a folder called "bookmarks" if they are not, drag them accross. Then restart the browser.

if that doesn't work, go to the firefox site and re download the browser, uninstall the old one first. Then, when you go to install the new one, it should ask you if it wants to migrate preferences accross from the old version, say yes.. hopefully problem solved.

thanks i already tried that, the bookmarks have like completly vanished dont know where they went. ill try unistalling and re installing see what happenes.

look for the bookmarks in the documents and settings folder...go to application data/mozilla/profiles/(your profile name) and the bookmarks.html files should be there...it prolly isn't as you say it has disappeared so do a search using the following paramaters:

book*.*

If you do find a bookmarks.html file, double-click on it and it will open with (hopefully) your bookmarks. Copy it to above folder and restart Firefox if you have it open...voila, working bookmarks!
