MELBOURNE has won the bidding war with Sydney to stage the Socceroos' World Cup farewell match – a friendly with Greece on May 25.
Bleak City's massive Greek community – that is still celebrating Marcos Baghdatis' appearance in the Australian Open final – will be out in force again with MCG events chief Trevor Dohnt anticipating an 80,000 crowd for the game.
But the MCG – scene of World Cup despair against Iran in 1997 and the failed qualification bid against Uruguay in 2001 – won't know until later this week whether it will be chosen ahead of the 50,000-capacity Telstra Dome.
The southern metropolis won out after Football Federation Australia was seduced by the Greek factor, denying Sydney's Telstra Stadium – venue of November's World Cup playoff win over Uruguay – another view of the Socceroos.
Dohnt said: "We are the number one venue bidding – and after what you've seen at the tennis over the last fortnight it's obvious the Greek population will come out in numbers.
"We have a capacity of 100,000 – and it wouldn't surprise me if we got upwards of 80,000 for the match."
The Socceroos will continue their World Cup preparations with a friendly against Holland in Rotterdam on June 4. They have pencilled in a final warm-up against a yet-to-be-revealed non-qualifier in Europe three days later.

Anyone got a tent for sale? Sleeping bag required to. I want a tent so i can go camping outside the ticket office for the Greece v Australia match.lol
The greece game on May 25 is 4 days after Zambidis fight in Melbourne. It is great timing, looks like a week in Melbourne two huge events.
I have spoken to some greeks who plan to go for Australia over Greece. Where r their loyalties? 400 years of turkish occupation didn't convert the greeks to turks, but 1 generation out here and there's greeks going for Australia over Greece. Disgraceful.

On the Evening of May 25 the Streets of Melbourne will be ours, it will be greeks going nuts! Drums horns flares colour noise crackers u name it.
Greeks r Known for Hostile atmosphere's. This game will be no different, there will be tension. It will be awesome. The noise the Greeks will make in the MCG will be unreal. The colour the chants everything, it will be nuts. Greeks will be going nuts left right and centre days before the game it will be crazy cos we'll be all hyped up.
All that the Aussies have is Yellow t-shirts and that annoying chant Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi. They will be all interested in this game because it is the farewell game before their world cup campaign plus they will have a full strength team. All those dickheads who stopped George Street and Federation square in Melbourne to celebrate Australias world cup success, we will fucken silence those mother fuckers!!! It will be the Greeks celebrating in the streets and we will make the aussies celebrations of making the world cup look boring.
This game has the potential to be crazy. We will show the aussies what fucking Fanatic fans we r. This is Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, AEK, PAOK, everyone all rolled into one.
There is not doubt that there will be more greeks than Aussies. whole sections of the stadium we will own and if any security try stop the greekplanet army for having fun they can expect a full scale riot cos we will fight back. This is a greece home game not an Aussie home game they will have to go by our Rules not their paranoid aussie rules.

I just went to all the sites opened up different pages and searched all of them and virgin blue was the cheapest i found. One or two may have been cheaper but had hidden taxes.
I got my ticket for 142 bucks return with virgin blue. They have sale fares which will sell out fast. Some of the Qantas fares have already sold but they must have been pre-booked for corporate.
I guarantee that a month before the game flights will be like 200 bucks one way.
Haven't got my accomidation booked will worry about that later on.lol
You already know what you're wearing? Well done.hehe
Louky
Feb 15 2006, 11:57 AM
you got your air flight tix cheap... i saw cheap air fares too but as you said they had hidden catches and taxes...
apparently virgin, is the best flight trip to melb compared to qantas.. many i know have flew virgin and have no complaints...
dont go jet star.. even though their cheap airfares the airport is far and teh money you will be saving on the airfare will go tawards to cab charge ...
yes i agree with you, about a month before perhaps even earlier, maybe when venue tix go on sale they will increase accom rates
(some accom places may feel suspicious why so many wanna go 2 melb all of a sudden)
it would be a great idea, if the greek planet supporters were all in one mob in the one area... can tix be purchased so were all together??!!
lets not forget that this will be broadcasted in greece and possible other parts of the world therefore, yaiyia and pa pou and thea will be watching you .. so wear your gear and show them:

How can I forget JJ. He was in the seat in front of us & we needed an umbrella that day. It was like it was raining inside the bus.
Andrea actually came to that Community Ethnic Cup Tournament I played in at the end of last year.
As you know I was playing for AEK Sydney & he was givin it to me from the sideline when he saw me a Olympiakos fan wearing a AEK jersey.

Virgin blue and Qantas flights to melbourne that week will resemble olympic airways. Allow smoking on the flights.lol
