Giorgios Samaras made his debut for Manchester City in the English Premier League on Wednesday night when he came on for Andy Cole in the 65th minute in their 3-0 win over Newcastle Utd.

Kostas Chalkias has signed with Spanish 2nd Division side Real Murcia.

Xoutos has signed a loan deal with Reggina

Samaras made his starting debut today against Everton and was taken off in the 72nd minute. Ironically the game before that he was introduced in the 72nd minute against Newcastle.

No goals yet
HiNrg
Samaras made the starting line up for man city last nite....

stayed up to watch the first half before i fell asleep..

he's a good prospect i reckon...
niko
Manchester City are the shittiest team. They cant string two passes together and I think they put in one good cross the whole game. Samaras had one good chance but generally played pretty shitty
Vicky
i watched the game... so far i can't say he is an exciting prospect bcos that was one the ugliest games of football i have seen my whole life.....i was strugglin to watch it, it was seriously appauling... no skill wat so ever just, the ugliest goal, no passing that actually counted just looked like 20 malakes running around chasing eachother not the ball...

hopefully for samaras sake the next game they play is better quality football so that he can show why they spent the amount they did on him, something like 6.5million pounds if i am correct...
HiNrg
Also.....Giannakopoulos scored again in BOlton 1 Wigan 1 game.

man city aint all that bad niko they have some great games... but last night was Xalia!!! ps niko did u actually watch the EPL omg ohmy.gif lol

I had to put myself through a whole game of that horrible anti-football. What a shocking game they played. Anyway, Minimalistix, perhaps you should keep watching that game a bit longer if you want to see some good football. Man City plays that terrible football, you all know it. The "if I cross it in enough times someone might score" football where we play long balls to the wings and dont bother with a dekari because you know, those creative types shouldnt play in Britain. I could watch VPL if I wanted to see such atrocious play. Good to see Samaras in a bigger division though I dont think i'll be watching too many more City games. They need a midfield, I dont like Samaras playing that shitty style, he has great feet, he can dribble, not many Greeks can dribble. He is better suited to a more skillful team who play feet although he'll be able to play they're crappy style because he's big

I dont follow it much but who is supposed to be the creative midfielder at Manchester City and was he playing?
Tellia Pavla
Samaras has good control & touches for a tall player. If he wasnt playing I wouldnt watched it. See teams like Everton & Man City have mostly British players & without the South Americans, Dutch, Spaniards, Italian, Greek foreign players which dominate most of the other premiership clubs you dont get skillfull football, its all long balls & crosses.

IOANNIS AMANATIDIS SCORES WINNER

NUREMBERG, February 8 (Bundesliga) - Eintracht Frankfurt completed the double over Nurnberg to ease their relegation fears and leave their opponents hovering above the drop zone.

Top scorer Ioannis Amanatidis' sixth league goal of the season proved the winner but the promoted side were grateful to goalkeeper Oka Nikolov for keeping the home side at bay.

Indeed, it was Nurnberg who began the brighter, demonstrating the confidence gained from their five-match unbeaten run.

Marek Nikl blazed over from the edge of the box before Jan Polak showed more control from a similar distance, but his attempt was smothered by Nikolov.

But the visitors eventually settled and Polak was guilty of dwelling on the ball as Benjamin Kohler robbed him before playing in Greek international Amanatidis, who forced Nurnberg goalkeeper Raphael Schafer to turn his effort behind.

Kyrgiakos bid still on despite fans fury
09 Feb 2006

OLYMPIAKOS will ignore the fury of their fans to step up signing moves for Sotirios Kyrgiakos. Rangers' Greek defender is being targeted by coach Tron Sollied to bolster his dodgy defence.

But Olympiakos supporters' opposition to any such deal is gathering momentum. They don't want Kyrgiakos because he once played for bitter rivals Panathinaikos and they chanted slogans against him during Monday's 2-1 win over Kallithea.

But Sollied is not put off by the protests and is ready to make a firm move for the 26-year-old.

Kyrgiakos signed a one-year deal at Ibrox last summer after a successful loan spell. But his contract expires at the end of the season and a move back home is a strong option.

Sollied said: "The best Greek players must play at Olympiakos. It is very important for us to have them in our squad.

"I understand that many of our fans are not going to be so happy with our transfers. But taking players from Rangers is not the same as taking players from Panathinaikos."

Samaras earns Greece call-up
Reuters

New Manchester City striker Georgios Samaras has been called up by Greece for the first time for an eight-team tournament in Cyprus at the end of the month.

The 20-year-old Samaras joined English Premier League City from Dutch side Heerenveen in January.

"I have been observing Samaras for quite a while and now was the appropriate time to select him," Greece coach Otto Rehhagel told a news conference after selecting 10 foreign-based players in his preliminary squad.

The remainder of the squad will be named early next week.

Greece play their first game of the tournament against Belarus on February 28.

The other nations taking part are hosts Cyprus, Romania, Slovenia, Kazakhstan, Finland and Armenia.

The teams will be divided into two groups of four, with the top two in each section sharing the trophy.

Greece's preliminary squad:
Sotiris Kyriagos (Rangers), Angelos Charisteas (Ajax Amsterdam), Angelos Basinas (Real Mallorca), Stelios Giannakopoulos (Bolton Wanderers), Takis Fyssas (Hearts), Georgios Karagounis (Benfica), Georgios Seitaridis (Dynamo Moscow), Ioannis Amanatidis (Eintracht Frankfurt), Georgios Samaras (Manchester City), Kostas Chalkias (Murcia).

Praises for Aggelos!
28/02/2006 17:42

Monday's Spanish media contained some very flattering comments about Aggelos Basinas and his performance in the victory against Real Madrid. Here are some of them:

Diario de Mallorca
"Basinas was unstoppable, he created the second goal. The Greek can "read" the game and knows how to make everything look easy. He taught football, being the master of the midfield. His class is by far superior to that of the others and his assist reminded of... Michael Laudrup. We hadn't seen such an effort in years, here in Mallorca"

El Mundo
"Great performance by Basinas. The Greek ace confirmed his domination in midfield and is now irreplaceable in the team."

AS
"Aggelos Basinas made the difference. A great assist to Juan Arango gave the latter the chance to score the winning goal. Basinas, formerly greek champion and cup winner with Panathinaikos, put aside for a while his "dirty" duties and created a superb assist"

Ultima Hora
"Mallorca has changed for the better due to Aggelos Basinas, Nunes and Pisculizzi"

El Mundo Deportivo
"Aggelos Basinas was among the best in the game" (the paper gave him the highest grade among with 3 other players)

Samaras double fires CityPA

Georgios Samaras completed the best week of his life to shove sorry Sunderland even closer to the Premiership trap door.

Georgios Samaras fires City into the lead

After scoring twice in as many days on his international bow with Greece in midweek, Samaras followed up by blasting home the first half double that condemned the unlucky Black Cats to their 22nd defeat of a disastrous campaign.

Although the visitors scrapped valiantly and dragged themselves back into the contest through Kevin Kyle, they could not find an equaliser and their misery was compounded late on when skipper Gary Breen was sent off for two bookable offences.

• Samaras delighted with double strike

The win keeps alive City's outside hopes of a top six place and confirmed why Stuart Pearce was willing to splash out virtually his entire transfer budget on Samaras.

But the #6million outlay is already looking like a wise investment, particularly as the 20-year-old has so much obvious improvement in him and he was already much too good for Sunderland.

If a Sunday morning park player had suffered the kind of brainstorm experienced by Black Cats defender Danny Collins just nine minutes into the contest, he would still have been hearing about it the following week.

As it was, McCarthy stood in his technical area totally speechless as Collins collected an admittedly ill-advised short pass from keeper Kelvin Davis then, instead of simply belting it upfield, took one unconvincing touch before attempting to skip past Samaras, who had quickly closed down his space.

Samaras quickly shrugged Collins off the ball, then beat Davis with a ferocious low, angled drive.

George McCartney eventually got back but allowed Sinclair to step inside far too easily, allowing the former England man enough room to pick out Samaras, whose low volley rocketed into the bottom corner.

To their credit though, the visitors tenaciously kept themselves in the game and were rewarded with Kevin Kyle's first goal of the campaign midway through the half.

Whitehead came close when he was picked out by Julio Arca, only for James to collect his goalbound effort.

It proved to be the pivotal moment too as in his desperation to stop James launching an immediate counter, Breen stuck out both arms to block the keeper's throw. Already booked, Breen knew a red card was inevitable.

• Samaras delighted with double strike

Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce has predicted a sparkling future for uncut diamond Georgios Samaras after his early brace helped the Blues beat Sunderland.

'Georgios has a very bright future at this club,' said Pearce. 'From day one, I have been really impressed with his willingness to learn and felt he was someone I wanted to work with for the next few years.

'There are certain areas of his game which are very natural, at other times he looks so ungainly and he does things that defy belief.

'Our job as coaches is to improve his general play and eradicate the bad things but he has the raw tools to be a top player.'

Samaras was quick enough to take advantage of Danny Collins' disastrous attempt to wriggle past him on the edge of his own area, robbing the hapless defender before lashing a ninth-minute shot past Kelvin Davis.

When Trevor Sinclair sprang a badly marshalled offside trap to set up Samaras for a well-taken volleyed second 60 seconds later, it seemed City were set for a Sunday afternoon stroll.

But, not for the first time this season, Pearce's men let the opposition back into the contest and Kevin Kyle breathed fresh life into the game when he bundled home Gary Breen's knock-down midway through the opening period.

The Black Cats enjoyed the best chances of a nervy second period for the hosts but Dean Whitehead twice failed to beat David James with decent opportunities.

Sunderland's chances of avoiding their 22nd league defeat of an awful campaign ended when Breen received his second yellow card for blatantly trying to block James' attempt at a quick throw.

'It was just ridiculous,' said manager Mick McCarthy of his captain's crass move.

'What makes players do things in games? I don't know. It was a bad decision, as was Danny Collins'. In those situations, the aim is to get the ball as far away as possible.'

McCarthy will not publicly throw in the towel just yet but the proud Yorkshireman is realistic enough to know relegation is now an inevitable prospect for the Wearside outfit.

Sixteen points adrift of safety, Sunderland need another nine points from their final 10 games to avoid officially becoming the worst side in Premiership history.

On this evidence, even that looks like a tall order and McCarthy knows talk of pride at his side's battling qualities is starting to wear a bit thin.

'It is very frustrating,' he said. 'I am beginning to sound like a broken record because, once more, the players can take a lot of pride out of their performance.

'We have effectively sealed our fate with a dreadful start, yet we could still have taken something out of the game.

'The players deserve credit for that but I don't want to keep talking about pride. We are bottom of the league with 10 points. It is not good enough and it is not acceptable.

'My only target for the rest of the season is to get as many points as we can. We have to keep scrapping away and we have to stop gifting the opposition stupid goals, which stop us even having a chance of winning.'

GREEK INTERNATIONAL SAVES EINTRACHT FRANKFURT

FRANKFURT, March 5 (Bundesliga) - Wolfsburg claimed a fortuitous point against Eintracht Frankfurt at the Commerzbank-Arena to inch themselves slightly further from the relegation zone.

Mike Hanke had given the visitors the lead against the run of play with a spectacular long-range free-kick, but Ioannis Amanatidis hit back to earn Frankfurt a point.

The hosts, though, will rue the result as two points dropped after having the better of the exchanges throughout.

Frankfurt dominated the first half, going close on several occasions, but were unable to make the breakthrough and Wolfsburg clung on to parity until half-time.

The pattern remained the same until shortly before the hour-mark, when the visitors scored with their first shot on goal.

After a free-kick was awarded 30 yards from goal, Hanke stepped up to curl an unstoppable strike into the top corner and give his side a scarcely-deserved lead.

However, a semblance of realism was quickly restored to the scoresheet when good work from Frankfurt substitute Cha Du-Ri set up a straightforward chance for Amanatidis in the 65th minute.

The Greece international slotted the ball home to level the match, which was no less than his side deserved.

Despite continuing to pile on the pressure, though, they could not find the winner that would have reflected their dominance.

The draw leaves the two sides level on points and battling to pull clear of the bottom three, but the visitors will undoubtedly be happier with the point.

FRANKFURT, March 18, (Bundesliga) - Ioannis Amanatidis' hat-trick helped Frankfurt move five points clear of the relegation zone and dented Duisburg's slim survival hopes.

Francisco Copado and Benjamin Kohler also got on the scoresheet for the home side, while Adam Bodzek and Klemen Lavric pulled two back for Duisburg.

The result leaves Duisburg seven points adrift of safety and their misery was compounded when Uwe Mohrle was sent off in the dying minutes for two bookable offences.

Frankfurt got off to the perfect start in the Commerzbank-Arena when Amanatidis opened the scoring in the first minute. The Greek latched onto Alexander Meier's through ball and slotted coolly past Georg Koch.

And in the 11th minute Kohler doubled Frankfurt's lead when he unleashed a great shot from outside the box.

Duisburg were again caught out two minutes later when Amanatidis grabbed his second after Copado's excellent cross.

The away side started to re-group and in the 25th minute Adam Bodzek's goal handed his side a lifeline.

Markus Rehmer failed to clear the ball and Bodzek did not waste the opportunity as he curled past keeper Oka Nikolov.

Seven minutes later Duisburg started to dream of a famous comeback as Lavric scored to further reduce the deficit.

In the second-half Frankfurt regained their composure and got the reward when Amanatidis slotted home from close range to complete his hat-trick.

Copado almost made it five when he broke through the defence and unleashed a shot which was saved by Georg Koch.

But the Spaniard made amends in the 85th minute when he scored the penalty after being brought down by Mohrle, who received his second yellow for the challenge.

Stelios still keen on Liverpool
Reuters

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Stelios Giannokopoulos says he is still keen to move to "a bigger club", with Liverpool his dream location.

In an interview in the Greek daily newspaper Eleftheros Typos on Monday, Giannokopoulos is quoted as saying: "I would give everything to go to Liverpool."

The 31-year-old, who was a member of the Greece team who won the 2004 European championship, was close to a move to Liverpool last year but talks between the two clubs failed to produce a deal and instead he signed a new three-year contract with Bolton.

"I have become more stubborn since last season when I didn't go to Liverpool - although their official proposal gave me moral satisfaction," said Giannokopoulos.

"That's my dream. Not only to go to Liverpool but, in general, to go to a bigger team. Then I would say that I have reached the peak of my career. That's my vision and I am working very hard every week to make Liverpool or any big team chase my signature."

Bolton are seventh in the Premier League, four places behind European champions Liverpool.

Giannokopoulos, however, who has scored 12 times for Bolton this season, including the first goal in Sunday's (Monday morning AEDT) 4-3 defeat at Middlesbrough, did not rule out a return to Greece.

"I would rather stay and finish my career abroad. But if I come back to Greece it will only be for (former club) Olympiakos," he said.

Elsewhere in the interview, he praised Manchester City's Greek striker Georgios Samaras.

"He is only 21 but he plays like a 29-year-old," he said. "He is very mature and very talented. If he continues with the same rhythm, then City will be too small to keep him. He is made for bigger stuff."

Ajax Amsterdam 2-1 Vitesse ArnhemPA

AMSTERDAM, April 12 (Eredivisie) - Ajax mounted a desperate late fightback at the Amsterdam ArenA to defeat brave Vitesse and maintain their push for the top-five finish that will secure a place in the end-of-season Champions League play-offs.

Youssouf Hersi handed Vitesse the lead just after the hour mark to raise hopes among the travelling support that a late charge for a UEFA Cup play-off place might be within reach.

But with the seconds ticking down, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar pounced to level things up for Ajax with a thundering drive, while moments later the remarkable fightback was complete when Angelos Charisteas nodded home to hand under-fire coach Danny Blind a victory that elevates his side into fourth place in the standings.

The first-half was a largely disappointing affair, with both teams seemingly content to exchange possession in the midfield.

Ajax managed to mount an attack in the 12th minute, however, Tomas Galasek crossing from the right wing for Mauro Rosenberg who miscued from the edge of the box.

Vitesse`s best chance of the half came eight minutes before the break, but Tom De Mul was wayward with a powerful free-kick from 25 yards.

The second period saw greater urgency displayed by both sets of players, and in the 53rd minute Johnny Heitinga squandered a great chance to score the opener when his close-range header flew over the visitors` bar.

Then, just two minutes later, Nourdin Boukhari crossed for Ryan Babel to take aim from close range, but his effort was well saved by Harald Wapenaar in the Vitesse goal.

In the 62nd minute the deadlock was broken, somewhat against the run of play, as Hersi netted with aplomb for Vitesse after an incisive through-ball by De Mul.

The visitors` advantage was almost doubled 13 minutes from time when Gill Swerts broke clear of the Ajax defence only to see his shot saved by Maarten Stekelenburg.

And Vitesse were left to rue that miss with full-time approaching as Huntelaar popped up with a cracking equaliser after great work on the wing by Charisteas.

Into injury time, Greece international Charisteas turned goalscorer himself, rising highest at a Wesley Sneijder free-kick to bury the ball beyond the despairing dive of Wapenaar
