Greek sprinter tests positive during Games time
Sat Aug 9, 2008 1:34am EDT
By Karolos Grohmann

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Greek sprinter who failed a doping test days before he was due to compete at the Beijing Olympics is the first athlete to test positive since the IOC took over drugs controls for the Games.
Sprinter Tassos Gousis failed a Greek doping agency test and was ordered to return home from his training camp in Japan.

The International Olympic Committee confirmed the positive test was done since it officially took over drugs testing for the August 8-24 Games on July 27.

But it said it had not conducted the test itself and so the case was one for the Greek authorities to deal with.

"Yes, there has been a case of a doping violation found by the Greek doping agency," IOC spokesperson Giselle Davies told reporters on Saturday. "It was within the Olympic period."

"But it was not an IOC test. This is a case which is under the auspices of the Greek authorities. The athlete will not be coming to Beijing," she said.

The 29-year-old, who was due to compete in the 200 meters at the August 8-24 Games.

He now risks being banned from the London 2012 Olympics as well under a new IOC rule that states all athletes with a suspension of more than six months are to be banned from the next Olympics as well.

A first-time doping offence usually carries a two-year suspension.

The IOC, which will run a total of about 4,500 tests in Beijing and in training camps around the world, has also urged international federations to boost tests ahead of the Games.

Many Greek athletes, including 11 weightlifters, a boxer and a swimmer, have tested positive for banned substances in the past months following tougher controls imposed by the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) and the federations ahead of the Games.

The HOC had said it would increase the number of tests to avoid the embarrassment created by sprinters Katerina Thanou and Costas Kenteris when they missed a scheduled drugs test on the eve of the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Tassos Gousis: Greek athlete tests positive just prior to Beijing Olympics for methyltrienolone
AFP reports Greek track athlete Tassos (Anastasios) Gousis tested positive for methyltrienolone , and will be sent home.

A Greek track athlete due to compete in the Beijing Games has been recalled after testing positive for a prohibited performance drug, Greek sports officials said Friday.

The officials did not immediately name the athlete but Greek media later revealed that it was men's 200 metre runner Tassos Gousis, who denied any wrongdoing.

"I am innocent and my conscience is clear", Gousis told reporters. "It would be stupid for me to take a banned substance just before the Games," he added.

This event disrupts the opening day ceremonies, a bit:

The case broke on the day of the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. In a similar twist, two Greek athletes -- sprinters Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou -- had also sparked the first doping controversy of the last Games in Athens by failing to appear for tests.

Greek sports officials admitted the incident but declined to name the athlete, as only the first of his two samples has tested positive.

"We have been informed that there is a positive result involving one of our athletes," Segas chairman Vassilis Sevastis told AFP.

"The athlete will be recalled and suspended pending tests on the second sample," he added, without giving further details.

Both samples -- taken from a single batch provided by the athlete at the control -- must test positive for proof of doping to be established.

The drug was methyltrienolone, a nasty anabolic steroid, popular among the Greeks.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee said in a statement that the athlete had been tested by the Greek anti-doping council (Eskan) under a scheduled check of the Greek Olympic team before its entry into the Olympic Village...

Greek media reported that the banned substance was methyltrienolone, a steroid that has already caused the elimination of most of Greece's weightlifting squad and top swimmer Yiannis Drymonakos.

I agree some of the events are boring. I still watch though. The swimming is great if you have a short attention span since they are short races. The basketball is great because its not just the dream team anymore, and Greece is good. Im looking forward to the running.

Its just unfortunate that Greeks are failing doping tests. We seem good at shooting ourselves in the foot. Always.
