Sarkozy and Merkel slam the EU door
'No place for Turkey' FRANCE and Germany have slammed the door in Turkey's face, saying it has no place in the European Union. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said they both agreed that Turkey cannot become an EU member state. Their blunt remarks were made before the conference of the ruling UMP party in Paris, on Wednesday. Nicosia, which hopes to use Turkey's EU aspirations to gain concessions on Cyprus peace talks, yesterday distanced itself from the statements but did not rule out a change of tack. Different "As you know, the position of the Cyprus government was different when the decision was being taken to give the green light to Turkey to start accession negotiations with the EU," Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said. But he left the door ajar, saying politics were never static. "Politics are never static. They develop and you adapt to developments and the course which will follow, depending on what you have to face at a given time." Sarkozy was categorical in again rejecting the possibility of Turkey entering the bloc, saying that it could instead benefit from a "privileged partnership. "I want to be a friend of Turkey but I want to say that Turkey does not have a place in Europe, simply because it is in Asia Minor. "Turkey must benefit from the status of a privileged partnership" he told a meeting of the UMP (Union for a Popular Movement) . "Before thinking of countries which are not in Europe, we should perhaps think of countries that are, we must not let ourselves be caught in a trap, all the countries neighbouring on Europe do not have an opportunity to join Europe.. If we keep enlarging Europe, we will kill Europe, " he said to applause. United Moments earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, guest of honour at the meeting, also voiced her opposition to Turkey's entry in EU 27. Haha malakes. "One thing that unites the UNP and the CDU (the German Conservative Party) is that the two of them want to propose a privileged partnership to Turkey and not full membership," she said. -------------------- ![]() |

i am a strong supporter of Turkey's entry into europe.
we have no problems with turkey. what we have are historical differences. we are actually the same in many ways. we need to work together, and the historical differences need to be put in their place and in context. we should work together the way france and germany have managed to afetr centuries of war. |

In Turkey, 63% people don't want to join EU, 24% want to EU, and 13% say it is not important join or not. . .
Also I don't want EU, we have so different culture, religion and customs . . . Only Hungarian language a bit similar Turkish. We should only cooperate in military, there is already NATO This post has been edited by Turkish Crony: Jun 13 2008, 07:29 PM |

I agree. A priveleged partnership would be far more beneficial and less dangerous

I do not see why anyone would object to the European Union.
Any nation that does not espouse the values of the European Union cannot be called a democracy. The draft constitution, which is merely putting in to words the value of the Union at present, has the values that all nations should have:
That aside, there are also the economic benefits. If you are afraid of cultural change, what cultural traits do you have that are worth protecting that are more valuable than the above right, which should be afforded to all people. -------------------- |

That aside, there are also the economic benefits. If you are afraid of cultural change, what cultural traits do you have that are worth protecting that are more valuable than the above right, which should be afforded to all people. Economic benefits! No I don't think so I think Turkey damages EU's economy. 72 millions and 5 millions are unemployement, Also we have a many problems such as terror in East. We have risk of division - separatist kurds increase day by day also there is a Kurdistan in North Iraq we are going to civil war slowly. . . This stitutation might be caos in Europe. Also some Turks became to Radical Islamic behavior.(Also it is a risk for me, I am not a muslim I am Tengrist- Kind of Turkic shamanism in before the Islam All Turks' religion was Tengrism) In addition I am afraid of cultural change. Many Turks have already surmised that they are European. I like things which are original. So I don't want to EU with Turkey Privileged relationship is better. |

Economics aside.
The Kurdish sectarian movement could be quelled easily if only two things were done: (1) Turkey joins the EU; & (2) Turkey ratifies laws for equality on all matters for all 'ethnic groups' and enforces those laws. Then any violence from PKK would attract the harshest criticisms from the EU. Radical Islamic behaviour is usually a product of wahhabist support from Saudi Arabia. Joining the EU, a secular organisation, your faith of Tengrism is safe as the constitution will protect your individual freedoms and Islamofascism will be dealt with harshly. As to being afraid of cultural change, it happens. It always has. Greece and Turkey in 100 years will have different cultures to what they do today. Change is a given. -------------------- |
