Solomos Spirou Solomou, born 1970 in Paralimni, Cyprus, entered the history books on Wednesday, August 14, 1996 when he climbed on the flagpole, in the neutral zone at Derynia, Cyprus, to lower the raised Turkish flag. He was shot immediately by Turkish troops. According to the Associated Press: "Turkish troops on Wednesday killed a Greek Cypriot demonstrator and wounded 11 other people in the second fatal clash this week in the buffer zone of this war-divided island nation."

Earlier in the day, Solomou had attended the funeral of his cousin, Tasos Isaak, who had been clubbed to death by Turkish troops in the neutral zone on August 11.

Greek: Αναστάσιος (Τάσος) Ισαάκ) (1972 - 11 August 1996), was a Greek Cypriot activist. He was murdered by a mob of Grey Wolves in the United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus. He is considered a national hero in Cyprus and Greece.

Events leading to the assassination

In August 1996, in order to commemorate the 22nd year of Cyprus being a divided country, over 200 bikers from several European countries had organised a rally from Berlin (the last divided city in Europe besides Nicosia) to Kyrenia. They left Berlin on the 2nd of August and were planning to arrive at their destination on the 11th. Simultaneously, around 2,500 members of the right-wing organisation Grey Wolves were planning to travel to Cyprus from Turkey.

Due to heavy political pressure (even by the U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali) being applied to the Cypriot Motorcycle Federation to cancel the 11th August event, CMF finally succumbed. This was met with disapproval by a large portion of the bikers and other protesters, who decided to march on their own towards the buffer zone . Among them was Tasos Isaak.

At a moment, Isaac was trapped in barbed-wire without his co-protesters noticing he was left behind soon enough. A large group of Grey Wolves, realising he was helpless, managed to run towards his side and started clubbing, punching, kicking and throwing rocks at him. They continued for several minutes, unchallenged by the nearby UN peacekeepers, until the Greek Cypriots managed to take back from the mob Isaak's dead body.

The funeral and reactions

Tasos Isaak's funeral was held on the August 14 and was attended by thousands of people. Protests after the funeral led to the assassination of Isaak's cousin, Solomos Solomou.

On the November 22, 1996, the Cypriot government issued arrest warrants for the murder of Tassos Isaac against Hasim Yilmaz, a Turkish settler and former member of the Turkish Secret Service, Neyfel Mustafa Ergun, a Turkish settler, serving in the illegal Turkish Cypriot police, Polat Fikret Koreli, a Turkish Cypriot from Famagusta, Mehmet Mustafa Arslan, a Turkish settler, leader of the Grey Wolves in the occupied areas and Erhan Arikli, a Turkish settler from the former Soviet Union .

Greek government as godparent

When Isaak was killed, he left behind his pregnant wife. As a token of gratitude for his services to the Greek nation, the Hellenic Republic decided to be the godparent of the yet unborn baby. When the baby girl was born, she was baptised Anastasia (after her father), by the then Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos. The Greek singer Haris Alexiou has dedicated to her the song "Tragoudi tou Helidoniou" ("Swallow's Song").

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then these, taken by photographer Costas Kyriakides and reproduced here by kind permission of "Selides", Cyprus' leading weekly magazine, are a testament to the barbarism of the Turkish "peace-keepers" that the international community remains impartial to for the last twenty two years in Cyprus. Follow the hooded executioner in the red circle as he homes in with clear and definite intent, raised baton brought down with force and precision on the neck of the surrounded and immobilised victim on the ground. After the bloody deed is done (above) he looks bewildered at the UN soldier who seems to have spoilt his fun. Try mastering the dignity required to admit that such incidents do not belong to the world order that humanity is striving for at the close of the twentieth century, at least not from an ally of the west and definitely not from an imminent member of the European Union.

Follow the red circled hood and try to look deep into the eyes of the uniformed men and others bending over the helpless body of the Greek Cypriot protesting for Justice and respect forHuman Rights. Ask yourselves whether you have witnessed such an exhibition of brutish and cruel behavior before - horrors of nazi Germany and South Africa's apartheid years- perhaps?

Look deep into those eyes and ask yourselves how many more years will such thugs be allowed to abuse your tolerance and apathy and how many more innocent deaths will it take till the resolutions adopted on Cyprus by the international community are implemented and end the tribulations of this island 's peoples?

Take another careful look at the circled neanderthal in green as he enforces the kind of peace that he has been delegated to uphold for the "civilised" man. He has been around since time immemorial, unchanged and unchallenged, expediting his primitive will throughout his blood-stained history with an equal vehemence and cruelty as he exhibited against the Armenians and Greeks of Asia Minor in the past and as that he is currently utilising unhindered against the Greek Cypriots and Kurds. Unless he is checked or reformed, he and his generals will continue to take the liberties that the world will allow. Perhaps he is already too large of a monster to contain.

Dead by hands of the most ignoble

There is no way that Turkey should ever be included in the EU.
